While at a concert in Munich, Pete Doherty opened with the banned version of the national anthem that was used during Hitler’s Nazi regime. The concert went on for five more songs, but he was eventually forced to leave the stage. Is anyone surprised by his actions?

The blog Nightwatcher’s House of Rock has posted a list that was put together byMusicRadar.com of the greatest guitar riffs. It is not a surprise that one of Jimi Hendrix‘s riffs is number one. AC\DC, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin all have multiple riffs on the list. I will leave it up to everyone else on whether they agree with this list, but I have certain agreements and disagreements. There will always be these debates about music and that is what makes it so enjoyable.

I am a little late with this, but metal legend Ronnie James Dio has been diagnosed with cancer. Read more here. He will certainly fight this hardcore. Luckily doctors have caught it in the first stages.

If you have read much of my stuff, you will know that I am a HUGE Mastodon fan. I will watch or read anything about them. Heck, I even drove down to Atlanta in February to see them. But what I am writing about here today was a big waste of my time. Gohere to watch one of the most pointless interviews of all-time.

Awhile back, I blogged about NPR’s 50 Great Voices. On that post, you could write in your suggestions on who would be in their voting. This time around, they are also set for you to pick within the choices they have set for you. Go check it out. It is tough to decide just five people. There are so many great choices. But not only that, but it is a lot of fun.

Now I think Taylor Swift is a good wholesome sweet cute girl, but come on… wouldn’t everyone and their dog say she is overrated? And if not, what have you been smoking! The best part of her is the fact that she writes her own songs. But soon she will be past the young country girl stage. Will this part of her career overshadow anything she does later? I tend to think it has to. There is no way to go but down when your voice isn’t on the same level as a Carrie Underwood or Faith Hill.
And before you ask if I have even listened to her work, the answer is yes. I try to keep an open mind and listen to as much music as I can. If Taylor Swift is the best artist of 2009, then we have some serious issues. Of course, I see it as just the problem with popular music. Once again, and in closing, I do not have an issue with Taylor Swift… I even like a couple of her songs. But I will never say she is the artist of the year unless it is the genre of teen female country singers.
The creativity of pop music as a genre has become small and limited. At first, R&B was very creative and changed things. But you can see artists either embracing the limited or more and more trying to break away from mainstream.

NPR’s All Things Considered has released their The 50 Most Important Recordings of the Decade. It is a pretty diverse list, but only includes one metal album, Mastodon’sLeviathan. I was a little shocked to see a Britney Spears album on there. Of course, there were plenty of Indie artist and, of course, Radiohead. But I recommend checking it out.
